Airdate 11/10/11 12:49pm So how went the EAS test? The Federal Communications Commission said: "The nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System test was administered and the FCC and FEMA are currently collecting data about the results. This initial test was the first time we have tested the reach and scope of this technology and additional improvements that should be made to the system as we move forward. Only through comprehensively testing, analyzing, and improving these technologies can we ensure an effective and reliable national emergency alert and warning system." With two entire states not getting the alert, one would guess there is work to be done. Some Indiana stations monitored didn't alert or when they did there were tones, white noise and tones, no information otherwise. Last night, 6 hours after the event, Comcast was still advising their subscribers to be prepared for the event. In the "old days" results like this would have had station owners on pins and needles full of worry about fines or license problems. Today the FCC is about as effective as a fly swatter stopping a semi truck. The state of radio proves that. Many stations received the test ‘technically’, but certainly didn’t broadcast the intended message. Another test is said to be planned for Spring 2012. Maine Senator Susan Collins, the ranking Republican on the Homeland Security Committee, says she plans to introduce a bill into Congress that would expand EAS to the web.
