Country radio, long the most popular radio format, is no longer on top. Among 2,064 U.S. stations, the news/talk format now leads country. News/talk has gained 40 stations since November 2007. The format has gained 250 stations in the past five years and 450 in the past decade. Country has lost more than 350 stations since 1998. But it's still on top among current-driven music formats. Contemporary Christian is second with 945 outlets, followed by Spanish (922), adult contemporary, or AC (671) and top 40 (497). Contemporary Christian continues its upward growth, adding 28 stations from a year ago and more than doubling its numbers from a decade ago. The number of Spanish, AC and top 40 stations basically stayed flat during the last year. Other contemporary formats with more than 300 stations include alternative rock and hot AC, both with 380 stations; Southern gospel (322); and rock (310). Jazz, which has lost outlets in New York and Philadelphia, among other markets, dropped from 153 stations a year ago to 126 in November.

Use that time to stay calm and analyze the problem." Transmitters were not always as dependable as they are today so I had to exercise that wisdom multiple times. Today, radio executives need to use that approach as they watch the industry evaporate into a sliver of the revenue generating machine it used to be. Until now, they have not. (audiographics.com)

Comcast Cable and WWKI-FM have yet to reach an agreement on television arrangements for the annual We Care telethon, raising questions about the future of the longtime Kokomo charity event.
At issue is the revenue stream generated from advertising spots aired during the telethon. Negotiations between Comcast and WWKI became public this week, when the idea of moving the telethon to the GOV2 “government access” channel was broached.

Get well wishes go out to Dean Spencer, Owner of WBIW-AM and WQRK-FM, and co-owner of WPHZ-FM. Spencer is on the mend after bypass surgery and is resting at home. Meanwhile at his stations, GSM Rebecca Godsey has been demoted to AE and Sarah Reinhard is the new GSM. Reinhard comes to the station with no radio background. The current GM, GSM and Group PD have no radio experience. This equation would add up to why the station is running almost zero spots and ratings are at their lowest in almost a decade.

Some good news for radio overall...
Listening to the radio continues to be part of Americans' daily life, according to results of a survey from American Media Services. The survey shows that 64% of American adults listen to the radio at least once a day. 80% say they usually turn on the radio when they get into their car, and nearly three-quarters (73%) said they are listening to the radio as much or more than they did five years ago.

About half (51%) say they usually stay tuned to their favorite music station when commercial breaks come on, a statistically insignificant change from 53% six months ago. Only 7% said they turn off the radio, and 38% said they change to another station.
Daily listenership was 64% in the latest survey, compared with 61 percent this past March, 63% in September 2007 and 64% in April 2007.
Four out of five (80%) said they usually turn on the radio when they get into their car, compared with 73% last March, 74% a year ago and 75% in April 2007.
73% said they listen to the radio as much or more than they did five years ago, compared with 72% last March, 74 percent a year ago and 69% in April 2007.
Radio remains the Number One way that Americans learn about new music. Nearly half (49%) cited the radio, compared with 27% from friends, relatives or other word of mouth. Lesser sources included TV and reviews in newspapers or magazines.
Nearly half of Americans (47%) said it doesn't matter to them whether their radio program is originating locally. Only 28% said it mattered a lot.
And among those who have listened to Internet radio or continuous music on the Internet, 39% said they listened in the past week, compared with less than a quarter (23%) who said that six months ago. 37% said they are interested in having an Internet connection in the car.

Sirius XM announced last Friday that it will carry all Notre Dame football and basketball games over the Internet. Comcast, the second-largest Internet provider in the U.S., will challenge a ruling handed down by the Federal Communications Commission last month. The ruling set an important precedent, marking the first time a company had been ruled in violation of the FCC's regulations guaranteeing access to the Internet for users. The ruling related to Comcast's limits imposed on bandwidth for certain file-sharing applications like BitTorrent, limitations that the FCC ruled should be discontinued by the end of the year. "We filed this appeal in order to protect our legal rights and to challenge the basis on which the [FCC] found that Comcast violated federal policy in the absence of pre-existing legally enforceable standards or rules," Comcast executive vice president David L. Cohen said in a written statement. He said the company believes the ruling "was legally inappropriate and its findings were not justified by the record." Comcast announced last week it would impose a 250-gigabyte cap on monthly Internet usage for residential customers starting on Oct. 1. The cap was announced in response to complaints from customers, many of whom wanted a definition of "too much" Internet usage. Before the announcement of the cap, users could be penalized for exceeding an undisclosed bandwidth limit, and risked having their service suspended. A user could download 125 standard-definition movies, about four per day, before hitting the limit.

No CP for a would-be Kentucky noncom. Marty Hensley’s Indiana Community Radio Corp. (ICR) and Pennyrile Christian Community squared off for the right to build a new class A signal at 91.7 in Madisonville, KY, and in the FCC’s initial analysis, ICR won the CP based on the point system. But then Madisonville’s commercial station, Sound Broadcasters’ WKTG (93.9), noticed that the proposed transmitter site for the new station was the tower it owned. That posed a problem, as Sound told the FCC: "At no time prior to filing or in the more than seven years that [ICR’s] application has been pending did ICR contact Sound or obtain consent from Sound to use the [Site]."And given what it calls ICR’s "lack of candor," Sound says it wouldn’t lease space on the tower to Hensley now. ICR told the FCC it did have permission from Sound to use the tower, but it couldn’t supply any documentation, or even the name of anyone it had talked to at the company – so the FCC has now dismissed Hensley’s Madisonville application, instead awarding the CP to Pennyrile. Purdue University's FM public radio station has received approval from the Federal Communications Commission to increase its power transmission from 5,000 watts to 14,000 watts. The move will allow WBAA Radio to potentially increase its audience area by 90,000 people, the station's general manager Tim Singleton said."It will increase the size of the signal a few miles but, more importantly, it will increase the strength and quality of the signal in our main coverage area of Tippecanoe County," Singleton said. "We've had comments from several years from people in Kokomo (about the signal), and we hope this helps." Singleton said WBAA, which can be found at 101.3 on the FM dial and at 920 on the AM dial, will now combine the effort to increase power with its conversion to digital.Singleton said he expects the station to have the digital conversion and new power transmitter in operation sometime after the first of the year.

House leaders aren't ready to take up the Senate bill, but the action in the House Appropriations Financial Services Subcommittee would achieve the same result. The subcommittee approved the spending bill on a unanimous vote. But Rep. Ralph Regula, R-Ohio, the ranking Republican on the subcommittee, said he is concerned about the FCC provision. The Internet, he said, has given consumers wide and diverse access to news. The full committee is scheduled to vote on the spending bill next week, but the final measure likely will be wrapped into a large year-end spending bill covering virtually all federal agencies. At any point in the process, lawmakers could remove the FCC provision.

People are giving to help Indiana flood victims. A one-hour telethon held by WRTV helped the effort.

A hedge fund that loaned Summit City Radio Group nearly $9 million is being liquidated, but an official with the company said it’s unlikely to have an effect on the four-station operation based in Fort Wayne. The stations continue to run as normal, said J.J. Fabini, group general operations manager. The hedge fund invested in corporate and real-estate debt and companies going through mergers and other reorganizations, according to a fund audit. It also made long-term private-equity investments in companies. D.B. Zwirn Special Opportunities Fund LP loaned Summit City Radio $8.85 million to pay off and refinance existing debt and generate more working capital, which was disclosed to the Federal Communications Commission in a September 2006 filing. The deal also included D.B. Zwirn receiving 95 percent of the voting interest in Summit City Radio. That funding paid expenses related to recent changes, including dropping two station formats and relaunching another. The group now has three radio station platforms: WGL, 1250 AM, and WGL-FM, 102.9 FM, its adult-contemporary format; WNHT, 96.3 FM, its Top 40 format; and WXKE, 103.9 FM, its rock format. Northwest Capital Appreciation maintains a majority interest in Summit City Radio Group. Zwirn, through its subsidiary, Bernard Radio LLC, in 2006 was approved to take control of the Summit City Radio broadcasting licenses after giving the loan. But when Summit City Radio completed restructuring changes in February 2007, a portion of the loan was converted into company equity, which allowed Northwest Capital Appreciation to maintain majority control and Summit City Radio to keep its broadcasting licenses. It may take up to four years to completely liquidate the hedge funds, which include private-equity investments and other holdings that are hard to sell.

The following was a letter to the editor of the South Bend Tribune. It is a reminder of how radio has changed and why it is in the shape it is in today...

On May 18, our area was without electricity for approximately eight hours. I had always heard that one needs to keep a flashlight and a battery-operated radio for situations like this. As I was going up and down the AM and FM dials it struck me that I could not find one station that was being broadcast live and locally, including the news reports which were only national news, generally followed by a taped weather forecast. My question is, is there no market for any station to be live and local on a Sunday afternoon, and if not, where would one turn for information if this was truly an emergency?(southbendtribune.com)

Randy Schiffman’s is leaving WANE, channel 15. He is retiring from television after more than 20 years. He came to the station in 1987. Schiffman was the station’s sports director and anchored sports segments during WANE’s evening and late-night newscasts. He’s moving on to explore other opportunities in Wisconsin, said WANE News Director Ted Linn.

Reporter Niccole Caan also has left the station to become the evening and late news anchor at WLFI in Lafayette. Lin TV Corp., owns both stations. WLFI’s longtime female anchor left in March, and Linn recommended Caan for the job.

Lin TV Corp., saw first-quarter net income drop from what it reported in first-quarter 2007. Net income was $1.5 million, a 93-percent decrease from the prior-year period’s $20.7 million. The decrease was due in part to last year’s one-time gain of $23.1 million from the sale of company operations in Puerto Rico. Net revenue was $93.1 million, an increase from first-quarter 2007, when it was $91.8 million. Company President and CEO Vincent Sadusky said the company paid off $22 million in debt during the quarter. In the second quarter, net revenue is expected to be $103.2 to $105.2 million.

WFFT, channel 55, owner Nexstar Broadcasting Group Inc. saw first-quarter net revenue increase 2.6 percent from the same period last year. Net revenue was $63.7 million in the quarter ended March 31. During the same period in 2007, net revenue was $62.1 million. The company reported a net loss of $15.3 million. Without a one-time, $7.2-million charge for a contract termination, the net loss this quarter was $8.2 million. In the first quarter of 2007, the net loss was $9 million.Total net debt was $670.4 million, up from $665 million reported at the end of 2007. Nexstar chairman, president and CEO Perry Sook said in a written statement the company expects to end 2008 with the lowest debt leverage ratio in its history. Nexstar is expecting second-quarter net revenue to be $69.5 million to $71.5 million, an increase of 1.2 percent to 4.1 percent from the prior-year period.

It was less than two years ago that the good and great – media moguls, politicians, black leaders and a star-studded list of entertainers including Aretha Franklin and Beyoncé – gathered at the J.W. It’s only been downhill from there. Last year, Radio One posted a net loss of $387 million after its sales fell even faster than those of the industry generally and it was forced to write down more than $400 million in the value of its radio licenses.
